As the stimulus and spending bills occupy endless column inches (and the minds of policy makers and American citizens), a matter equally pressing to American interests remains unresolved: China owes two TRILLION dollars in unpaid, defaulted sovereign debt obligations to Americans.
At 2020s end, Americans will begin the new year wondering where January 1 rent will come from. Food distribution lines can extend for miles in some American communities. This is happening while China’s debt obligations to Americans not only go unpaid – they are willfully rejected as debts China refuses to acknowledge.
The United States has taken its own debt obligations to China and other international borrowers seriously. Payments are issued faithfully and the stability US Treasuries provide represent a gem among a host of volatile and uncertain investment vehicles in a tumultuous world. This is true while many other holders of various bonds face precarious times. Bonds have historically been a prudent means of investing. When an investor purchases a bond from a corporation or government, they’re essentially purchasing a loan: the investor receives interest payments for a period of years and then will receive the principle amount of the loan when the bond’s period matures. Sovereign debts are bonds issued by nations. These bonds are purchased by other nations or individual investors who see the nation as a reliable borrower that seeks to uphold its international reputation through faithful repayment. A nation that stalls upon or refuses repayment of its sovereign debt can see its reputation and its credit access plummet across the world.
As of late December 2020, China’s US Treasury holdings remains slightly above $1 trillion – an obligation to which the United States pays roughly $72 million daily in interest alone. The United States honors its debt obligations, even while Americans struggle to make ends meet. China, however, is proceeding into the 21st century leaving its debt obligations behind.
How It All Began.
In the early 20th century, various governments in China issued sovereign debt bonds. Particularly under the Republic of China (which fled to Taiwan after the cultural revolution), hundreds of millions of dollars worth of sovereign bonds were issued to fund the nation’s ascent into modernity. These resources were intended to go toward infrastructure investments on the mainland – new roads, ports, educational facilities, industrial developments were the aims of these bonds. The debts were issued in good faith, with even private citizens across the US purchasing them.
It was believed that China would one day be a collaborative trading partner and that a mutually beneficial trade relationship would be a means of securing peace. It should be noted that the debts were issued in gold. Their value is pegged not to a relative government fiat currency, but rather to the current value of gold. This has major implications on the net present value of these debts in today’s dollars.
The Republic of China did indeed begin to make payments toward these debts. However in 1938, the debts were defaulted upon and bondholders went unpaid and continue to be unpaid to this day. According to the American Bondholders Foundation, led by its president Jonna Bianco, the amount owed by China to the 20,000 bondholders it represents equates to roughly $2 trillion, given an average 5 percent interest rate, decades of China’s default status, and a skyrocketing increase to the price of gold on today’s market. This does not include China’s unmet obligations to other bondholders outside of the United States.
One might say, “But the Republic of China issued these bonds – that means Taiwan is responsible. Make them pay for it.” This is not valid. Taiwan as it currently exists does not benefit from the investments made with the bond proceeds, which were focused on the mainland. Even if one were still to hold Taiwan responsible, the People’s Republic of China would still be required to recognize the debts as theirs if they do indeed take their own One China claim seriously and assert Taiwan as part of China.
One unique feature to sovereign debt is known as the law of state succession. This is a long established aspect of sovereign debt that recognizes that a new government is the beneficiary of the assets and resources of its preceding government and they are also the recipients of the debt obligations incurred by former governments. In other words, a nation cannot simply declare – “Sorry, but these debts were made by that of another government with a different political ideology – we’re not responsible for this.” A new government maintains the prior debt obligations.
“Come On, Man!”
Here’s a common reply to the matter of these defaulted Chinese debts: “Come on, this is 2020. That was 1913 – move on man!”
Not so fast.
Other established nations have taken their debt obligations seriously, even when they’ve spanned nearly a century. Take for example the debts from World War II that obliged repayment from Great Britain: a final repayment of war debts of that era was issued for $83 Million on December 31 2006, over 60 years after the war ended. Likewise, in 2017 Russia made its final payment toward its Soviet-era debts.
It is also not unprecedented for China to pay toward these debts: under Margaret Thatcher’s leadership in 1987, the People’s Republic of China made repayment of their defaulted debts to British bondholders or else China would not participate in Britains’s financial system. That China repaid British bondholders but now refuses to repay Americans places China in selective default.
Sovereign debt never disappears and legitimate, established nations recognize this.
So what should struggling Americans – many of whom face rising credit card and rent balances – think of China’s unresolved $2 trillion that remains owed? What should American tax payers think of their own taxpayer resources going toward paying China $72 million every day?
Here is a suggestion for an approach toward the matter that will best serve American interests:
- The President can immediately resolve this issue by working with the American Bondholders Foundation, which can assign at the President’s authorization all of its holdings of defaulted Chinese sovereign bonds to the US Treasury for pennies on the dollar. This arrangement is readily available and can be done at the President’s choosing;
- These Chinese bonds can then be presented by the US Treasury as repayment toward US Treasury holdings China owns: essentially a debt swap;
- This transaction would wipe out any US Treasury obligations to China. The United States would no longer need to be obliged to pay what is determined by the Director of National Intelligence as the primary existential threat to America;
- The United States is then able to redirect the $72 million in daily interest payments toward other purposes benefitting the American people domestically;
- In addition, the massive capital gains derived from this transaction can be used by the federal government toward purposes benefitting US interests.
If China is seen as a primary existential threat, it is prudent that the United States should no longer remain China’s debtor, especially when a clear and actionable path toward eliminating these debts is readily available for the President to implement.
The vast resources made available from this transaction can be better utilized toward advancing American interests domestically.

Members of Georgia’s Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Elections and members of the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing to study Georgia’s Election Laws, and the numerous voting irregularities in the 2020 presidential election.
The hearing comes after a Senate subcommittee held a hearing last week at the capitol to discuss perceived voting irregularities in November’s presidential election.
During the hearing witness Jovan Pulitzer was invited to testify on the irregularities in the November 3rd election.
Jovan Pulitzer is a brilliant inventor and author best known for creating and patenting CRQ and has founded companies that included seed investment rounds ranging from $1.6m to over $250m.
Joe Hoft wrote about this brilliant man first here at The Gateway Pundit.
On Tuesday Jovan Pulitzer revealed the differences between votes printed for Democrat counties versus Republican counties.
The Republican counties had a barcode up in the right-hand corner.
The votes from two different counties are printed differently.
This caused GOP votes to get kicked out by the Dominion machines.
Secretary of State Raffensperger allowed this to take place in a historically red state.
Raffensperger should be brought up on charges immediately.

Dear Honorable President Donald J. Trump,
It has come to our attention that despite your repeated Executive Orders to declassify all information concerning the plot to destroy your campaign and your Presidency, these orders are being blocked. As you know, as President, you have full authority to declassify this intelligence.
We understand that the Deep State, including people inside the White House and ostensibly on “your” side, are warning you not to do this and to keep the information from the public. They are betraying you. The claim that releasing the information would harm US National Security is a lie. The reality is that by releasing this information you will expose the dirty deeds of Americans and the foreign countries that have conspired to destroy you and end your Presidency.
We know some of what is contained in this intelligence. We know that it shows the role that intelligence operatives from the United Kingdom played in trying to destroy your chance to become President. We are given to understand that the evidence of foreign interference in the November Presidential Election is indisputable.
You must release this information, not just to save your Presidency, but to save and preserve the Republic. Your oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution is on the line.
We plead with you to ignore the worm tongues who surround you and work to undermine you. We are with you.
We the American people want transparency and the truth. We beg you to release the information that will set us all free.
For the sake of your Presidency and our republic, please release the information Americans deserve to see.

The spending bill that the House just passed, and the Senate will vote on, on Friday is an absolute joke and a disaster for America.
The bill will raise the smoking age to 21, without a debate, without a vote from the American people. That’s right, our soldiers can now go to war, be on the front lines, but they can’t have a cigar. That’s how insane this bill is.
This bill will also support federal research on GUN CONTROL.. That’s right, the CDC, the Center for Disease Control will now be doing research on gun control. I’m sure that’s somewhere in the US Constitution where gun control is a disease, right America?
The bill continues all of the corporate subsidies and tax breaks, a huge Democrat talking point. It also only gives President Trump $1.2 Billion for the border wall, he asked for $8 Billion.
Watch Senator Ted Cruz explain this atrocity below:

(Natural News) Under the guise of fighting a “pandemic,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) pretended to purchase face masks and other Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) supplies from communist China in a massive money laundering and bribery scheme, the full details of which are still unfolding.
Newsom and Kemp both wired large sums of taxpayer dollars to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in exchange for face masks and other “personal protective equipment” (PPE) that either never came or arrived in much smaller, cheaper amounts than what was ordered. The rest of the cash was funneled back from the CCP into the personal bank accounts of Newsom and Kemp, as well as those of their friends and business partners.
This is treason, by the way, and there are likely many other politicians from other states who also participated. At this point, however, we know for sure that Newsom and Kemp were complicit in the scheme.
Similar kickbacks and bribes were also facilitated with regard to the fraudulent election, Wood says. This further implicates Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R), whom Wood says will be forced to face the music if the election results are invalidated.
“I believe that Brian Kemp is corrupt, and I think he was corrupted with Chinese money,” Wood alleges. “And I don’t think he wants this election overthrown and the real results posted because then Brian Kemp is going to be facing a Trump administration attorney general, and Brian Kemp would find himself in jail. It’s that simple.”
“He sold himself out. Now he’s trying to hide to try to get this election validated even though it’s illegal because if it’s invalidated, Brian Kemp and a lot of other Georgia people are in trouble, including the secretary of state.”

It is now increasingly clear that the explosion in Nashville was not caused by an RV bomb, nor a conventional missile but rather a “Directed Energy Weapon.”
The evidence for this includes:
- Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper warning in September that China possessed “killer satellites” and “directed energy weapons” that could threaten the United States.
- The apparent missile “trail” in the skyline video of Nashville, which is also consistent with a stream of ionized atmosphere and particular matter suspended in the air. (High-powered lasers can transform molecules into plasma.)
- The large blue “plasma flash” observed on a street-level video camera, an instant before the kinetic explosion. This blue plasma light is consistent with the use of an extremely high-powered, high-altitude laser system that instantly transforms solid matter into its plasma state. This same technology has been used in pilot programs to transform landfill waste into simple elements such as carbon. This process is called “plasma torch gasification” and is considered a “green” technology to eliminate landfill by transforming matter into carbon.
- Interestingly, this “plasma torch gasification” process, which can also be created by an extremely powerful laser burst, releases huge amounts of hydrogen gas, which is itself explosive in a conventional (chemical) sense. What an observer would see is first a bright blue plasma light, followed by a yellow fireball, followed by black carbon dust all over the ground, and this is what we observe in Nashville.
- The fact that no explosion crater appeared on the street under the RV, but rather a layer of charred carbon, which is consistent with the aftermath of a plasma state caused by an energy weapon (most likely a laser used for ablation of samples in the laboratory, which would typically be a laser in the 198nm range, or what is called “Deep-UV”. Some ablation lasers also use 266nm.)
- The US State Dept. has warned that Russia is already testing an anti-satellite missile, which is part of Russia’s defense against the orbital laser weapons possessed by China and the United States.
This topic is covered in more detail in the December 28th Situation Update, embedded below.
Here are the highlights from the podcast:
- FBI claim of DNA matching from the scene of the explosion carried zero credibility.
- The explosion disabled the ZME air traffic control comms out of Nashville, blinding air traffic control to high-level aircraft on that day.
- The FAA issued a highly unusual “ground stop” order.
- Aftermath of the explosion reveals the AT&T building was hardened like an NSA bunker, with reinforced concrete and a fake public facade, with fake vents.
- The AT&T building carried an NFP warning sign which explains, “Flammability 4 = will vaporize or readily burn at normal temperature, or is readily dispersed in air and will burn readily.”
- The materials warning sign also carried a “W” symbol: W = Reacts with water in an unusual or dangerous manner.
- The AT&T / NSA center had intercepted all the traffic of Dominion voting systems software updates and real-time remote manipulations from China and other countries.
- Data stored to magnetic tape, which was physically unharmed by the explosion but may have been subjected to electromagnetic interference sufficient to cause some data loss.
- The Nashville FirstNet comms system also served the Huntsville, Alabama FBI “second headquarters” which Trump was setting up as a “white hat” FBI campus. CNBC reported on the $1 billion FBI building there.
- CodeMonkeyZ shares tweet: I heard there was a BIG meeting last night discussing “significant intel that is so much bigger than anyone can imagine”.
- “Fairview” is the name of the NSA program to spy on Americans through AT&T data gathering.
- City Blue Imaging in Rochester burned down as part of a campaign to systematically destroy the evidence of voter fraud. This is the subcontractor involved in the printing of mail-in ballots. All equipment was destroyed in the three-alarm fire.
- Fake ballots in AZ arrived via a cargo plane from Korea, ballots were protected by AZ National Guard and transported to Maricopa County for counting in order to steal the election. This is the report from Stew Peters (see 2nd video below).
- Bobby Piton reveals new details of how “phantom voters” were used to rig the election, where people with common last names like Jones, Williams, Jackson were replaced with unique last name phantom voters who voted for Biden.
- Piton concludes, “a sophisticated State Actor was able to optimize a desired outcome for both the State of Georgia and the State of Pennsylvania.”
- Far-left journalist charged in BLM firebombing attack on police cars.
- Texas says pregnancy is a “medical condition” and plans to prioritize all people with medical conditions for covid vaccines, starting with Black and Brown people, as part of a eugenics / depopulation program to eliminate Hispanics and Blacks.
- It appears that Trump is dealing with much more than an election war, but rather a global war against human beings as citizens of Earth.

Federal agencies faced the most urgent kind of deadline Monday: They were given until noon, Washington time, to respond to a compromise by foreign hackers in a sensitive piece network management software.
The emergency directive from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) ordered all agencies using SolarWinds products to review their networks and disconnect or power down the company’s Orion software. Although many of the details of the hack remained unclear as of Monday afternoon, a few things helped explain CISA’s urgency: Orion has been available to the government for years through a complicated array of contracts, and the software operates at the heart of some crucial federal systems.
SolarWinds has been supplying agencies for a long time, first developing tools to help them understand how their servers were doing, and then branching out into network and infrastructure monitoring. Now IT teams can use those tools to manage virtualization and even security features such as privileged accounts and patching.
Orion is the framework tying all of those things together and helping system and network managers understand what’s going on. At least 32 federal agencies bought SolarWinds Orion software since 2006, according to a preliminary search of the Federal Procurement Data System – Next Generation (FPDS-NG) conducted by The Pulse of GovCon, a boutique market intelligence firm.
That footprint made Orion an attractive target to foreign spies, who used the company’s updating system to push out malware that allowed them to break into the departments of Commerce, Homeland Security and the Treasury. The attacks on the federal software supply chain are part of a campaign staged by Russian hacking group APT29, or Cozy Bear, on behalf of the SVR intelligence agency, The Washington Post first reported.
Many more agencies could be affected, but those were three confirmed by multiple media organizations as of Monday afternoon.
“It’s almost a nightmare scenario, when you think about it, because these are tools that people put into the most sensitive parts of their network, the network management centers, to help them understand what’s going on with everything from the Wi-Fi switch in the conference room to the server that might have the most sensitive data at the agency,” said a retired senior government official, who asked not to be identified to speak freely about the compromise.
“And the adversary has essentially had a conduit to push malware to bypass the firewalls and all the other normal security checks and could potentially have moved anywhere in the infrastructure from there,” the former official said.
A public assessment of SolarWinds’ full federal footprint remains difficult, however, in part because 48 different resellers were awarded some of the 204 known federal contracts for Orion products since 2006. The likelihood FPDS-NG has not recorded all such transactions is high.
Adding to the challenge CISA has of assessing the damage is the fact the Orion vulnerability has been used to deploy malware inside agency networks since March, according to federal officials.
“The compromise of SolarWinds’ Orion Network Management Products poses unacceptable risks to the security of federal networks,” said Brandon Wales, acting director of CISA, in a statement. “Tonight’s directive is intended to mitigate potential compromises within federal civilian networks, and we urge all our partners — in the public and private sectors — to assess their exposure to this compromise and to secure their networks against any exploitation.”
CISA’s emergency directive locks down federal networks, but the next steps will be to look for signs of penetration, identify malware, eradicate it, and potentially fix security configurations that were compromised.
U.S. Cyber Command — which has more mature processes and more experienced cyber protection teams in place for doing such things — is likely coordinating with CISA, the retired official said.
Assessing Orion’s reach
Any agencies that choose to cut ties with SolarWinds over this incident will need to replace the infrastructure they’re losing.
“The cleanup from this could be going on for months and could cost millions of dollars,” the retired official said. “A bunch of days have been ruined here that’s for sure; there’s going to be a lot of IT guys who are going to be working overtime for months to deal with this.”
That number is extensive if contract awards for SolarWinds Orion products on FPDS-NG are any indicator.
“Due to the limitations of these procurement systems and their classification procedures, we can assume that this is the floor — not the ceiling,” a Pulse spokesperson wrote FedScoop.
Since 2006, contracts for SolarWinds Orion products have been awarded by the:
- Bureaus of Land Management, Ocean Energy Management, and Safety and Environmental Enforcement, as well as the National Park Service and Office of Policy, Budget and Administration within the Department of the Interior
- Air Force, Army, Defense Logistics Agency, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and Navy within the Department of Defense
- Department of Energy
- Departmental Administration and Farm Service Agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture
- Federal Acquisition Service within the General Services Administration
- FBI within the Department of Justice
- Federal Highway Administration and Immediate Office of the Secretary within the Department of Transportation
- Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Transportation Security Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Office of Procurement Operations within the Department of Homeland Security
- Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, and Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services
- IRS and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency within the Department of the Treasury
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration within the Department of Commerce
- National Science Foundation
- Peace Corps
- State Department
- Department of Veterans Affairs
While all of these agencies bought SolarWinds Orion products, that doesn’t necessarily mean they were still using them between March and June, when the company suspects the vulnerability was introduced during updates. Agencies that have ongoing contracts for SolarWinds Orion products include the Army, DOE, FLETC, ICE, IRS, and VA.
SolarWinds estimated that, of the 33,000 Orion customers in active maintenance during the relevant period, fewer than 18,000 installed products with the vulnerability, in a report it made to the Securities and Exchange Commission about the cyberattack.

Conservative firebrand scores win in legal battle after facts labeled as ‘false’
Conservative firebrand Candace Owens is celebrating her first major victory in her legal battle against Facebook’s “fact-checkers.”
Owens, a political author and commentator, challenged Facebook’s left-leaning fact-checking partner PolitiFact over a “false” rating — and won.
Earlier this month, Owens announced that she was suing the “third-party fact-checkers” used by social media platforms.
Owens launched the case because she became tired of being censored on social media by third-party fact-checkers, as well as seeing fellow conservatives being silenced on Twitter and Facebook.
Not only did PolitiFact remove their “false” rating and retract an article that claimed Owens’ video false, but the site offered an added “correction” admitting that she was right and they were wrong.
Owens post was targeted by the “fact-checker“ because it correctly stated the fact that Joe Biden has not officially been declared the “president-elect,” despite the media labeling him that way.
Owens’ video, which was posted on November 12, offered commentary on the 2020 presidential election, and was captioned, “Joe Biden is literally and legally not the President-elect. So why is the media pretending he is?”
The video was hit with a “false” rating, and, as noted by Owens, theoretically, every single person who shared the post was alerted by Facebook that they had shared “false” content.
Each “false” rating a website or page gets hit with adds up to limit the reach of all other posts, meaning several “false” ratings can drastically reduce the audience that news outlets can reach online – a devastatingly effective way to silence conservative media.
Owens celebrated her first victory in the case against the social media behemoths on Saturday.
“Weeks ago, [Facebook] censored a post of mine which truthfully stated that [Joe Biden] is NOT the President-elect,” Owens said via Twitter.
“So I got lawyers involved,” she continued.
“Conclusion? [PolitiFact] uncensored the post & admitted that they LIED by rating my post false.
“The fact-checkers are lying for Democrats.”
The note from PolitiFact reads as follows:
Correction: PolitiFact originally labeled this video false in our capacity as a third-party fact-checker for Facebook.
On Nov. 20, an appeal to that decision was made on behalf of Ms. Owens.
PolitiFact approved the appeal on Nov. 20, determined that a correction was appropriate, and removed the false rating.
“At 8 Months pregnant, I unfortunately cannot fight on the ground alongside patriots like I am used to, but I am taking every measure to fight these communists in the court room,” Owens said in a follow-up post.
“It is my goal to expose these lying ‘fact-checkers’ one by one. [Joe Biden] is NOT the President-elect.”
At 8 Months pregnant, I unfortunately cannot fight on the ground alongside patriots like I am used to, but I am taking every measure to fight these communists in the court room. It is my goal to expose these lying “fact-checkers” one by one. @JoeBiden is NOT the President-elect. pic.twitter.com/hW4NLpK4tc — Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) November 28, 2020
The Blaze reported that Owens retained a pair of lawyers to represent her in the lawsuit, including attorney Todd McMurtry, who was part of the legal team representing former Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann.
Owens is reportedly suing fact-checkers from USA Today and Lead Stories, according to the Daily Wire.
“It is time to fact-check the fact-checkers,” Owens said.
“I’m going to put these suckers through discovery and figure out what the relationship is that they have with Facebook.”
Owens launched a website titled “Fact-Check Zuck,” which says, “Our freedoms are being stripped away.
“The overlords of Big Tech are determining what Americans can and cannot say, share, like, and post.”
“Support our legal efforts today as we fight back against Facebook’s fact-checkers, confronting those who are suppressing free speech, thought, and expression across our great country,” the site says.
“I wanted to show that these fact-checkers just lie, and they usually go unchecked because most people don’t have the money, don’t have the time, and don’t have the platform to go after them — and I have all three,” Owens said.
Owens argued that Joe Biden is not technically the president-elect as of yet, he was only named as the president-elect by media outlets, which is not authorized to name the president-elect.
Biden is projected to be the winner of the 2020 presidential election, but the president-elect will not officially be named until the Electoral College cast its votes on Dec. 14, once all states have officially certified their results.
President Donald Trump is currently challenging the results of the election and has filed several lawsuits in critical swing states.

Is karma going to come calling for Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats? I know that it sounds crazy, yet another improbable scenario in a season when our hopes have been dashed repeatedly after hearing predictions that a stolen presidential election would be rectified in the courts. But the scenario that follows is far from impossible, given House rules for voting in person, the tiniest House of Representatives majority (9 votes) in decades, the deep ideological split within the Democrats (downplayed or ignored by the partisan media) and the fading lucidity of Nancy Pelosi.
Mike Lillis and Scott Wong of The Hill point out that
…lawmakers must be present on the House floor to cast their vote for Speaker, precluding the option for members to vote remotely, as many have done throughout the pandemic. [emphasis added]
This differs from the rules under which House members have been voting since COVID became a factor. Matt Margolis of PJ Media explains:
While House members can vote by proxy due to emergency rules adopted in May to protect members from getting and spreading COVID-19, but, as The Hill reports, “the proxy-voting rule expires with the new Congress, requiring lawmakers to be in the Capitol in person if they want to participate in the Jan. 3 floor vote for Speaker.”
New rules governing the 117th Congress happen after the vote for speaker.
House Democrats have been taking advantage of this proxy-voting rule in significant numbers. On December 18, nearly 90 Democrats voted by proxy.
Lillis and Wong point out that 2 years ago, Pelosi lost the votes of 15 House Democrats, enough to deny her the speakership this time around, and this time there will be defections:
… at least three moderate members of the caucus are already on record saying they don’t intend to vote for Pelosi on Jan. 3: Reps. Conor Lamb (Pa.), Jared Golden (Maine) and Elissa Slotkin (Mich.).
But the peril of Republicans capturing the Speakership would be based on COVID preventing enough Democrats from showing up to vote in person:
A failure of Pelosi to secure support from half the voting members would, at the very least, throw the process into chaos. In the Democrats’ nightmare scenario, the math could tilt so far in the Republicans’ favor that it yields a GOP Speaker.
“Let’s say, just theoretically, we had six or eight people out with Covid and the Republicans have none. They probably could elect [Kevin] McCarthy,” said Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), referring to the House GOP leader.
Lawmakers were reminded of their vulnerability this week, when five more members of the House tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of infected lawmakers to at least 35 since the pandemic hit the U.S. roughly a year ago.
With that in mind, Pelosi’s supporters say it’s an outbreak over the holidays — not Democratic detractors — that poses the single greatest threat to Pelosi’s otherwise-expected Speakership victory next month.
“We’re in a health care crisis, right? No one can get sick. That’s the X-factor here,” said one House Democrat, a Pelosi ally, who spoke anonymously to discuss a sensitive topic. “We need everyone to be healthy. … That’s the big fear.”
Democrats are the party of COVID panic, and that may influence attendance:
… several Democrats have ongoing health concerns unrelated to the coronavirus that have kept them from the Capitol for much of the year. A handful of COVID-19 cases on top of that, some fear, could sink Pelosi’s prospects.
“COVID is a wild card,” said Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.). “If we have sick members who cannot come back, and we only have a four-vote majority, it throws our entire advent of the 117th Congress in peril — a smooth advent.”
Johnson warned that a chaotic Speaker vote on Jan. 3 would highlight internal party divisions at exactly the wrong time — just two days before a pair of special Senate elections in his home state, which will decide who controls the upper chamber for the next two years.
Add in the anger simmering on the hard left over Biden not filling his potential cabinet with lefties and the existing tensions between Pelosi and The Squad, and the possibility of Pelosi failing to get a majority increase. Margolis explains:
Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) believes it’s a real possibility that Republicans could outnumber Democrats for the vote, and the top Republican in the House, Kevin McCarthy, could be elected speaker.
“Let’s say, just theoretically, we had six or eight people out with COVID and the Republicans have none. They probably could elect McCarthy,” Yarmuth told The Hill.
A House Democrat and Pelosi ally who spoke anonymously with The Hill doesn’t deny that a COVID outbreak could sink Pelosi’s chances.
“We’re in a health care crisis, right? No one can get sick. That’s the X-factor here. We need everyone to be healthy… That’s the big fear.”
Another anonymous House Democrat believes Pelosi losing reelection due to absent Democrats is a real possibility. “Obviously, the concern is that with 435 people going all over the country, it’s hard to imagine that not one of us will have the virus on January 3.”
This morning on Fox and Friends, Rep. Elise Sefanik, a very level-headed Republican House member, was taking seriously the possibility that Dems could lose the speakership.
Early January has a lot of potential surprises ahead.
